Inspect the item before pickup
Look over the item in good light and ask the giver about details that could affect its condition or safe use. If it has a make and model, check the manufacturer’s guidance and relevant product-safety recalls before you agree to take it.
- Check for cracks, sharp edges, instability, water damage, mold, pests, unusual odors, or unknown residue.
- Look for missing guards, fasteners, instructions, or other pieces needed for safe use.
- Pass on an item with a recall or a hazard you cannot resolve safely.
Clean it safely
Identify the material and read its care label or manufacturer instructions before cleaning. Follow cleaner labels, use suitable protection, and ventilate the area.
- Never mix cleaning products, especially bleach with ammonia or acids.
- Keep children and pets away while cleaning and store products as their labels direct.
- If you cannot identify a residue or possible contamination, do not experiment with cleaners; get qualified guidance or pass on the item.
Decide whether it is useful and safe enough to take
A free item still needs to fit your needs, space, and ability to collect it. Confirm the pickup details with the giver, and feel free to pass if its condition, size, or handling is not right for you.
- Ask whether you have a real use for it and a suitable place to keep it.
- Check that you can move it safely and that the pieces needed for its intended use are present.
- Confirm that it is still available, where to collect it, and any pickup deadline.
Use it only when no hazard remains
After pickup, inspect and clean the item again as appropriate. Use it only when you have resolved every safety concern and it works as intended. If a hazard remains or you are unsure about a repair or product safety, do not use it; ask a qualified professional or arrange safe disposal.
